Appliances that use gas such as your boiler are perfectly safe if installed by a Gas Safe registered engineer but could be deadly if installed by someone unqualified, that’s why it is critical that you look for the Gas Safe logo and check your engineer’s credentials.
Formally known as CORGI, the Gas Safe Register is the UK’s official list of gas businesses and engineers who are registered to work safely and legally on boilers, cookers, fires and all other gas appliances. By law all gas engineers must be on the Gas Safe Register.
Carbon monoxide (the gas inside your appliances) is extremely flammable and also extremely toxic if inhaled, therefore the person you employ to install your boiler must know what they are doing and have the Gas Safe certification to prove it. Don’t cut corners, Trust the Triangle.
Got you covered
If you use a Gas Safe qualified engineer, you will be covered by your insurance if anything does happen to go wrong. If you choose to use someone without those credentials, your insurance could be invalidated. Whether you are a landlord or a homeowner, ensuring that you use a Gas Safe qualified fitter and an industry-approved appliance is critical.
Cutting corners can cost lives
According to Gas Safe Register, around 1.1 million gas jobs are carried out each year by illegal fitters who aren’t properly qualified. This puts householders at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, gas leaks, fires and explosions.
Many of these illegal fitters had been employed purely on recommendation. In none of the cases had the credentials of the fitter been checked. According to the Health and Safety Executive, in the past three years, 22 people have died and there have been nearly 1,000 injuries related to gas incidents.
It’s easy to check whether your gas fitter is on the Gas Safe Register. Simply visit the Gas Safe website and type in the name of the company, and use a reputable, established brand, such as Diamond Gas and Heating.
Once you have established that your gas fitter is Gas Safe certified, then go further and double check that they are qualified for your specific job, as a Gas Safe engineer that can install a gas fire may not be qualified to install a boiler.
Once you’ve had your appliance installed, it’s crucial to get it regularly serviced to ensure it remains in good working order. You should also install a carbon monoxide detector near to the appliance, just to be extra safe.
